Requirements:
The SAS Summer Camp requires a 5-week commitment from June 28 to August 6, 2008. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old at the time of the camp. Every volunteer will able to participate in others SAS programs

Mission:
Our Volunteer Program gives students, teachers and qualified individuals the opportunity to work directly in SAS's Programs and CCTUR GUANIN. INC sponsored schools. The summer camp was developed for children aged 8 to 17 that are critically in need of academic help, with many being one or more levels behind in school. Volunteers work side by side with Dominican staff in a group effort that crosses language and cultural barriers to promote the exchange of ideas, strategies and methods in teaching and activities.

Volunteers develop specialized educational programs that focus on self pride, respect and peace education. Most children entering the camp can neither read nor write. With many having previously failed in public schools, the camp provides an opportunity for children to learn about their environment, culture and peers through experiential learning and educational excursions. Most of the children are discovering and developing respect for their community and themselves for the first time.

Volunteer as a Summer Camp Counselor in the Dominican Republic! Spend five weeks in the DR teaching children sports, arts & crafts, writing, reading, and other activities. We invite you to be part of our SAS Summer Camp 2008. I'm Severino Polanco, manager of SAS' programs. In 2007, I Went to Hinton, Alberta Canada to do my volunteer Summer Camp with the Boys and Girls Club of Hinton, it was the most beautiful and wonderful experiences for me working with kids at the Boys and Girls Club in Hinton, Alberta, Canada. Working with Julie M. Kennedy manager, wonderful woman, Tami Sub-director, Liana Thompson Secretary, etc.

Summary:
The summer camp program for children aged 10 to 12 supplements general educational needs and offers extracurricular hands-on activities that engage children in their education. Children are divided into age-appropriate groups and assigned counselors to maintain a 4:1 student to teacher ratio.

Summer Camp is held from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. During these hours, campers rotate between five 50 minutes periods of instruction in one of six subject areas:

  • Academic Tutoring
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Music and Dance
  • Sports and Recreation
  • Science and Nature
  • and Life Skill

With a 15 minute break for breakfast and a 30 minute break for lunch. For children who are behind, this is their only option to catch up. For those who are ahead, the camp provides a welcome challenge. And for everyone aged 10-12, this camp provides an experience that can steer their future lives in a more positive direction.

Please note:

The deadline for the 2008 Summer Program is April 25th, 2008.
